About Horses

  • Horses can sleep both lying down and standing up.

  • Horses have around 205 bones in their skeleton.

  • Horses are herbivores (plant eaters).

  • Horses have bigger eyes than any other mammal that lives on land.

  • Because horse’s eyes are on the side of their head, they are capable of seeing nearly 360 degrees at one time.

  • There are 5 Major types of Horses: Draft horses, warmbloods, light horses, gaited horses and ponies.

  • Horses come in many colors… vivid coat colors, ranging from solid and static to multifaceted and ever-changing. Their colors are controlled by genetics. Their colors can be Bay, Chestnut, Grey, Black, Sorrel, Dun, Palomino and Pinto.

  • The average gestation length in a mare ranges from 320-362 days. Your mommy carried you for about 280 days.

  • A Mare can give birth to her foal by either standing or laying down. Their front hooves and nose show first, and the foal is normally birthed within a few minutes.

  • The average brain of a horse is about 2.5” in size and weighs about 22 ounces, half the size of the human.

  • Horses are not able to vomit and if they get a stomach problem it can be very harmful to them. This is known as Equine Colic.

  • Horses will not lie down simultaneously because at least one will act as a look-out to alert its companions of potential dangers.

  • There are 4 basic gaits that indicate the speed a horse is moving. Walk, Trot, Canter and Gallop.

  • Horse riding is often used as a form of therapy for people with disabilities.

Feed, maintenance and Healthcare Needs…
The average horse weighs 1,100 pounds and needs to eat a minimum of 16.5 pounds to 27.5 pounds of its body weight each day in hay and pellets.

Vet and Farrier…
Vet is an annual visit for standard check-up, teeth, sheath, shots, minor care for non-emergency injuries… Averages $485 per year per horse. In addition to vet fees, there is a cost for hoof maintenance. Caring for your horse’s hooves isn’t an optional expense. Poor hoof care can lead to infection, joint hyper-extension, and even permanent lameness. Horses are seen by a Farrier every 6 weeks to be trimmed and shoed… Average per horse $150

Adopt A Horse Programs:

Feed a Horse for 30 days = $150
Love a horse (includes stall chores and learning basic horse interactions) = $250
12 Riding lessons (3 per week) = $480
Care for a horse for 6 months (food = $900, 1 vet call, = $85, 3 farrier visits = $450) = $1,435

Meet Gunnar

Gunnar – As best we can tell he is Quarter horse and Morgan.  He is gentle and loving, 13 years old, rides very nice and is ready for adoption!

Flier is an Arabian, 24 years old. She was a big racer with a significant win as a young horse.  Like Gunnar she is gentle and rides well.  She is looking for her new adoptive home!

Meet Evvy

Kruetka – Now known as Evvy is a 15-year-old spirted Arabian that has never been fully broken.  She would be a great project horse to finish breaking or a great companion horse.  We have her in the stall with another horse which calms her down so her sweet disposition can be better appreciated.
